Job Description

The associate director of External Collaborations and Scientific Societies is part of the medical affairs team and supports AbbVie’s commitment to build strong relationships with professional societies and academic associations. This role requires working closely and align goals, objectives, and strategies with colleagues across communications, commercial, medical affairs, legal and compliance to ensure key regulatory/data milestones and activities are communicated with regionally and nationally.

 

  • Establish, maintain and enhance strategic relationships with leading patient advocacy, professional medical societies and policy organizations. Direct activities based on business priorities and represent AbbVie at key patient advocacy, professional medical and policy meetings and provide updates to management
  • Builds and manage strong relationships with tier one professional associations (AACR, ASCO, ASH NCCN, NCODA, HOPA)
  • Develops a proactive approach to managing and enhancing company’s relationships with select patient organizations; builds strong, mutually productive relationships and provides compliant guidance to existing and/or evolving patient organizations
  • Identifies, develops, and advances collaborative programs and initiatives with HCP associations at the national level as well as finding local opportunities that forward mutual goals and establish AbbVie as a preferred partner
  • Supports the Director by providing medical/scientific strategic and operational input into core medical affairs activities such as: health-care professional/provider interactions; generation of clinical and scientific data.
  • Supports the develop a strategic engagement plan for academic and collaborative research institutions
  • Collect and combine strategic and scientific presentations; actively participates in relevant internal meetings and helps in the development of medical affairs strategies for oncology assets; provides relevant scientific and technical training.
  • Supports the scientific external collaboration team
  • Strategically manages budgets for sponsorships/memberships to patient organizations
  • Anticipates and recognizes patient advocacy/policy trends, and implications for AbbVie
  • Develops and applies evaluative metrics to programs and activities to monitor success
  • Creates systems and procedures by which to track and internally communicate advocacy relations activities and successes across the company

Qualifications

  • 10+ years’ experience in medical affairs (oncology preferred) or similar function/experience with a demonstrated track record of success (5+ years in external facing e.g. MSL)
  • Demonstrated understanding of industry and business priorities and concerns and the ability to translate business needs into tactical patient/disease advocacy plans and materials
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing patient advocacy programs that drive business strategy and priorities and engage both internal and external stakeholders
  • Project and budget management experience
  • Established relationships within the oncology community desired

  • Outstanding oral and written communications and presentation skills
  • Relationship builder with exceptional interpersonal and networking skills
  • Ability to interact successfully and with confidence at all organizational levels, including senior leadership, and across a wide range of corporate functions
  • Strong knowledge of medical strategy, clinical development, and medical science liaison, medical affairs areas
  • Strong project management skills, attention to detail and prioritization
  • Comfortable working within tight deadlines and managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Works collaboratively, independently and with a sense of urgency; able to prioritize areas of strategic importance to the company and to help articulate to senior management
  • Self-starter, able to work independently
  • Collaborative problem solver who thinks outside the box

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
