Description
The Network Engineer is responsible for performing technical work of analyzing, recommending, ordering, coordinating, and maintaining network infrastructure, including Dark and Lit services across our network core. Provides support for the Network Engineering Director. Contributes to and completes projects as part of the Engineering team.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate performance and prepare plans for capacity improvements procedures and provide comprehensive support for same.
- Works with internal teams and vendors to gather requirements and pricing information for budgeting projects.
- Works in a team environment and individually on systems-level projects assessing specifications, performance requirements, security, and network needs. Provide feedback and recommendations based on the information gathered.
- Reviews and modifies existing network solutions to improve performance, correct errors, and conform with security policies and compatibility requirements of available hardware.
- Coordinates, designs, and implements new network systems to meet business needs.
- Creates documentation around new designed/implemented systems and existing systems.
- Establishes, implements, and maintains administrative policies, procedures, and standards.
- Helps prepare and executes departmental budget.
- Negotiates contracts with outside vendors and best practices; applies this knowledge to continually improve product lines and production efficiency.
- Designs, updates, and monitors data networking systems and equipment.
- Reviews network traffic, usage, and capacity to assess future network requirements.
- Makes recommendations to management regarding new system technologies and upgrades.
- Maintains current industry knowledge of network design and engineering industry standards.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned by management.
- Understanding of network engineering principles and practices.
- Understanding of LAN/WAN/SD-WAN/WWAN technology, administration, management, software, and hardware.
- Understanding of security-related hardware and software, intrusion detection, firewall implementation, and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
- Understanding of TCP/IP, IPv4, IPv6, DHCP, DNS, VoIP, SMS, and digital switching technology.
- Understanding of how to install, configure and support Cisco, Arista, and/or Juniper networking electronics including switches, routers, and firewalls.
- Able to read and interpret technical documents and information, such as operating and maintenance instruction manuals.
- Able to evaluate, test, and repair sophisticated equipment.
- Design and implementation of internet peering and network caching solutions
- Reviews and make improvements to existing systems where applicable and keeps firmware and systems updated on a regular patch cadence.
- Coordinate with various departments and perform all capacity planning activities in support.
- Perform analysis on all development plans for production and ensure compliance to all customer demands per facility.
- Design and schedule all weekly production and ensure effective implementation of schedule.
- Manage and maintain all system parameters for production schedule and monitor for effectiveness.
- Coordinate with all various teams and perform all connectivity assessment activities.
- Design and maintain all performance capacity reports and statistics for management.
- Provide assistance with design of systems and forecast resource capacity requirements.
- Develop various new functions and capacity processes and modify existing ones.
- Manage all key system metrics and provide support to all ad hoc reports and dashboards.
- Ensure compliance to all guidelines and ensure optimal utilization of all resources.
- Ability to make sound technical decisions using information at hand.
- Ability to effectively function as a team player.
- Performs Capacity and performance monitoring and planning.
- Coordinates implementations, changes, and maintenance of systems. Submit change advisory board (CAB) forms and attend CAB meetings to discuss approval.
- Trains, or provides training documentation to, users on new or modified systems and networks.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) and/or a minimum of eight years of related experience.
- Microsoft software experience including Power Point, Internet, e-mail, and database software as required.
- Project Management experience a plus.
- 8+ years of successful experience, preferably within telecommunications, where you have successfully managed prepare plans for capacity improvements procedures.
- Advanced understanding of fiber and community builds.
- Customer centric mentality with the ability to seek out solutions and execute them to completion.

- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations; ability to define problems, collect data, analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to travel up to 20% of the time.
