What you’d be doing in this role
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
At the moment, this role is focused on:
- Leading and coaching a team of 4 to 5 iOS and android engineers focused on building the video export tools for Native apps
- As an experienced engineer, you will help the team deliver scalable and robust product features for Canva users around the world.
- Guide these engineers in growing in their craft and career, allowing them to make massive impact through their craft
- You will work closely with the stakeholders to understand and contribute to the product roadmap.
- You will drive the planning and refinement of cycle goals, ensuring there is alignment between the company, group, and teams.
- You will foster a culture of collaboration and advocate for the engineering needs of non-technical collaborators within the group.
- You will own and drive the delivery of large, cross-team, and cross-group initiatives and projects from ideation to completion, with autonomy and independence of decision making.
Video is a complex technical problem that requires multiple parts of the software system to work seamlessly to deliver a smooth video editing, playback and export experience to users. The Video Compositor team works across multiple layers of the tech stack to ensure smooth functioning of the system.
We are seeking someone who wants to be in the thick of it - working closely with other technical stakeholders to design and deliver elegant solutions to complex problems, being across technical designs and decisions and caring for the professional growth and development of the people they lead. You’ll be managing a team of 3-6 engineers, growing individuals and leading the team to deliver goals.
You're probably a match if you have:
- Previous experience in technical people leadership or mentorship of engineers.
- Success in growing and leading iOS and/or android engineers, would be highly regarded
- Commercial experience in a software development environment, with a focus on mobile apps frontend technologies and associated libraries and frameworks. Our tech stack consists of Swift, Kotlin, Java but also JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, TypeScript, MobX, etc.
- Firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.
- Previous experience in working collaboratively with team members and communicating effectively.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to break large projects down into smaller ones and deliver on them through others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

In the next few months, we will deliver a customer-centric, intuitive and powerful video editing platform that seamlessly integrates with the Canva ecosystem to unlock the full potential of the Visual Suite. This enhanced editing experience will make it far easier for social media users to bring their ideas to life, and create engaging and professional content that stands out.
The Compositor Team is responsible for developing and maintaining the tools and systems that enable users to seamlessly download their designs as videos across various platforms, including web and mobile apps. This dynamic team plays a pivotal role in enhancing the user experience not only for export but also for playback and editing functionalities. Their work is integral to ensuring a smooth and intuitive process for users to bring their ideas to life in video format, contributing significantly to Canva's mission of empowering millions of global users in content creation.
This role is focused on the coaching of a small team of native engineers, working on the video export pipeline with Swift on IOS or Kotlin on Android, and working on reducing the gap between or native technologies and our web-based export workflow, built using industry-leading technology such as WebGL, WebGPU, Web Assembly, etc.
