What You'll Do
The Head of Risk Operations will lead and oversee a team of specialists responsible for ensuring the safety and integrity of the organization’s financial systems and processes. This role will focus on creating, executing, and enhancing risk management processes across three key areas: Identity & Onboarding, AML (Anti-Money Laundering), SAR (Suspicious Activity Reports) & Compliance Investigations, and Transactional Fraud & Disputes. The individual in this position will be pivotal in identifying and mitigating risks, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and driving operational excellence within the risk function.
Leadership & Team Management
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of risk specialists (agents) across Identity/Onboarding, AML/SAR/Compliance Investigations, and Transactional Fraud/Disputes.
Develop and implement team goals, KPIs, and operational standards to ensure high levels of efficiency and effectiveness.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and accountability within the Risk Operations team.
Provide training and professional development opportunities to enhance the expertise of the team.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and optimize fraud detection tools and systems, incorporating AI and machine learning where applicable.
Identity & Onboarding Risk
Oversee the development and enforcement of identity verification and onboarding procedures to ensure safe and compliant customer acquisition.
Manage and optimize KYC (Know Your Customer) processes to balance risk mitigation with customer experience.
Work closely with product teams to design secure and scalable onboarding solutions.
AML, SAR, & Compliance Investigations
Ensure adherence to all applicable AML regulations and guidelines, overseeing the review and investigation of suspicious activity and SAR filings.
Provide guidance on complex cases, ensuring thorough investigations and appropriate action in coordination with legal and compliance teams.
Establish protocols for identifying, reporting, and escalating suspicious activities, ensuring timely and accurate submissions to relevant authorities.
Transactional Fraud & Disputes
Lead the team responsible for detecting, investigating, and preventing transactional fraud, ensuring a robust dispute resolution process.
Implement advanced fraud prevention measures and tools to minimize risk exposure while maintaining a smooth customer experience.
Collaborate with payment providers and banks to ensure timely resolution of fraud disputes and chargebacks.
Compliance & Reporting
Ensure compliance with internal policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements related to risk operations, AML, and fraud.
Prepare and present reports on risk activities, metrics, and trends to senior leadership and regulatory bodies as required.
Act as the point of escalation for critical risk cases, providing insight and direction on complex issues.
What We Look For
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
10+ years of experience in risk operations, with a strong background in AML, fraud, compliance, and onboarding.
Proven experience managing and developing high-performing teams.
In-depth knowledge of risk management principles, AML regulations, and fraud prevention strategies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
Familiarity with risk management tools and platforms, as well as regulatory reporting systems.
Nice to Have
Certifications in AML (e.g., CAMS) or fraud prevention (e.g., CFE).
Experience in financial services, fintech, or a regulated industry.
Deep understanding of financial crimes, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
Proficiency in working with fraud detection and AML monitoring systems.
Ability to collaborate across departments and influence key stakeholders.
