Job Description

NBC News Digital is seeking a reporter to join its new sports desk.

The right candidate will be adept at writing about a wide variety of sports and can tackle the major events on the calendar (such as the Super Bowl, NBA Draft and Olympics). The person should embrace live blogging and breaking news coverage.

The reporter will also need to explain big moments to non-sports fans and write about the intersection of sports and society and pop culture.

We’re not looking for a beat reporter who will write game stories or someone who will write incremental player transaction news that is better found on social media. We want sports coverage that resonates with a general news audience and explains what is important and what is in the public consciousness.

The set hours will be when sports happens — afternoon and evening hours from Thursday-Monday. It’s preferred if this person is based in New York City or Los Angeles, though fully remote employees will be considered.

This position is represented by the News Guild - NY CWA.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Live blogging and writing major breaking news
  • Planning for the big events on the sports calendar
  • Being interested in what people are curious about in the sports world, and serving those readers
  • Writing clean, fast and accurate copy, headlines and photo and video captions
  • Communicating with a team of other reporters and editors
  • Making full use of the range of NBC News resources, including network newsgathering and multimedia
  • Expertise in writing SEO headlines
