JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications and Penn State Student Affairs are partnering to hire the inaugural director of the Student News Consortium. The Consortium comprises The Daily Collegian, Centre County Report, WKPS-FM The Lion, CommRadio and PSN-TV News. The Consortium, funded by the University Park Fee Board, supports and empowers non-profit, University-affiliated student organizations providing news and information to the Penn State community. It has a leadership committee of representatives from each organization, the College, and Student Affairs. The Consortium is designed to foster collaboration, operational efficiency and resource sharing among its member organizations. The director will be housed in the Bellisario College student media center and will have a dual-reporting line to the Dean of the College and Interim Assistant Vice President in Student Affairs. The director will work closely with student leaders and advisers in the Consortium, facilitating the planning and execution of joint projects. The Director will also convene and preside over committee meetings and business; ensure accountability and transparency in the use of funding designated for the Consortium, including that provided by the University Park Fee Board; ensure the Consortium seeks efficiencies that serve all members in external contracts; administer contracts on behalf of the Consortium; shepherd grant applications with foundations and agencies; set up training and professional development for members; collect and share demographic data for the Consortium; and perform other duties as needed. The Director will also take the lead in drafting and updating a shared ethics and business policy for all Consortium members and in establishing an annual editorial calendar. The successful candidate should have a bachelor’s degree and at least six years’ experience working in a news and/or or non-profit environment, bringing groups and individuals (preferably, students) together to accomplish shared goals. Strong interpersonal skills are essential. Budget and management experience is also required. Grant-writing experience preferred, along with experience in a higher education setting.
