About Primer

Fixing our K-12 education system is a civilizationally-important problem. We believe that all of our problems — including the ones that dominate the headlines — are downstream of education.

We have a simple thesis on how to solve it: empower 1,000's of educators to launch microschools in their communities.

We believe the historical tradeoff between price (tuition) and quality is a false dichotomy.

PrimerOS automates and eliminates much of the costs of traditional schools. Microschools have a structural advantage — asset-light real estate — which means much lower capex and opex. You put it together, and you get something that's never existed before: a world-class education that's accessible to normal American families and can rapidly scale.

What You’ll Do

As you might imagine, our revenue engine is quite complex: a mixture of state scholarship funds, education savings accounts and private payments. We collect tuition directly from parents (via ACH / credit / debit cards), from parents via state scholarships, and (in some cases) from states directly. Your role will be to own (and help improve) the receivables workflow for each of these revenue segments and manage both the internal and external processes which make that happen.

The Bursar’s core charge is to facilitate tuition collection and reporting from our state revenue partners and families. We believe this role is a great fit for those who have strong administrative experience within an educational organization or system (i.e., as a Bursar), though we are open to considering candidates from outside of education, like customer success.

Requirements:

  • In-house finance experience at an educational institution, ideally as a Bursar or within a Bursar’s team; experience interfacing with state and/or federal Departments of Revenue or Scholarship Granting Organizations is highly desirable

  • Attitude and professionalism: you are committed to providing our tuition payors (government partners, foundations, and families) with a top-tier experience in each interaction

  • Willingness to build: we’ll be looking for someone who can become our subject matter expert and can teach us what we don’t know and shape business processes based on their experience

  • While familiarity with basic accounting concepts is preferred, what matters is a willingness to interface with our accounting team to support revenue reporting (we can teach you the accounting that you need to know)

  • Proficiency in Microsoft excel is a must, and experience with financial management software systems is a plus

  • Ability to pass an exhaustive background and credit check, which will include providing your fingerprints

  • Previous experience with Scholarship Granting Organizations like Classwallet (Arizona), Step Up for Students (Florida) or Scholarships for Kids (Alabama) is desirable but not required

Key responsibilities include:

  • The Bursar will support the Finance and Operations teams in collecting tuition revenue from our state partners as well as providing our government partners the reporting required to support these efforts

  • The role will require substantial use of government portals and applications, you’ll be expected to grow into our subject matter expert on how to use them and the policies and regulations that govern them

  • You will be expected to keep and produce internal records and reports relating to your work, often in partnership with the accounting team

  • You will own the calculation of dollars owed to us by our government partners, as well as assist with any audits of these figures that they may conduct

  • While you will spend most of your time working with our government revenue programs and recordkeeping, the Bursar will also be our students’ families first line of contact on billing and tuition matters that are not resolvable over email by our support team

  • The role reports directly to our Head of Finance, though will involve frequent collaborations with our Engineering, Operations, and Education  teams.

If this sounds like you, fill out the application below with a bit about yourself and we'll take it from there! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email us at jobs@primer.com.
