Reuters is seeking an experienced journalist to lead its initiative reporting in West and Central Africa. Based in Dakar, the successful candidate will have a deep understanding of a vibrant region covering 23 countries, a keen eye for spotting trends, and the ability to write fast, groundbreaking, and insightful stories on a wide range of topics, from political upheavals to Islamist insurgencies, climate change and energy, to the latest cocoa crop in Ivory Coast and Ghana, and mining ventures in Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to initiate, report, and write insightful stories on a variety of topics. They will also be able to assist and collaborate with other correspondents and our network of over 40 stringers to develop and deliver initiative stories. As a senior correspondent in the bureau, the successful candidate will also assume some managerial responsibilities, stepping in for the bureau chief when required, and assisting in nurturing, coaching, and training other team members. About the Role As our Chief Correspondent for West and Central Africa Correspondent, you will: Be a self-starter who generates great ideas and writes with authority across the file Be fast and ensure Reuters clients get the news first Produce scoops and in-depth, revelatory features Work closely with visuals colleagues and our network of stringers, many of whom work in French, to generate original and compelling multimedia content Write clean, lively copy Be calm under pressure and a strong team player Be willing to travel at short notice About You To be our West and Central Africa Chief Correspondent, you will likely: Have at least five years of professional journalism experience Some experience in managing a news team Have experience working in hostile environments and/or emerging markets; knowledge of commodities and energy markets would be a plus Have a strong track record of developing sources, breaking news, and producing insightful features Be fluent in English and French; other languages would be a plus Have multimedia expertise Please note, the deadline for applications is Friday, 19th April, 2024.
