Varo is seeking a talented Staff Cloud Database Engineer to join our team. You will be responsible for the cloud database services, where you'll drive the vision and ownership for all of the enterprise database systems. As a staff level engineer, in addition to building and improving our infrastructure and processes, you will lead and mentor the team(s) while coordinating and communicating with stakeholders.

What you'll be doing
  • Work with stakeholders to understand database requirements, plan capacity, drive observability for database(s), execute maintenance, and build enterprise level roadmaps for database initiatives
  • Provide architecture consultation around optimal database design and performance 
  • Work with Engineering teams to help resolve database issues and deficiencies
  • Improve operational support including monitoring, performance analysis, testing, and debugging
  • Provide regular database training including holding discussions with development teams regarding best practices, trade-offs, and risk mitigation
  • Monitor and be on-call for all aspects of databases from the hardware; like disk, network, cpu, and memory as well as internal components like tables, indexes, error logs, transaction logs, user sessions, and buffers
  • Identify and resolve database contention and performance issues (slow-running queries, bottlenecks, and other latency related issues)


You'll bring the following required skills and experiences
  • 5+ years experience in Python programming
  • 8+ years of Postgres Database Administration experience on RDS
  • 5+ years of AWS Redshift Database Administration experience
  • 5+ years of experience with systems administration in a Linux environment
  • 5+ years of experience on AWS - particularly IAM, EC2, S3, RDS, DMS
  • Solid understanding of distributed computing environments
  • Expertise in database administration activities like installation, configuration, backup & recovery, query optimizations, creating roles, managing user permissions and resolving deadlocks
  • Expertise with query analyzers and query tuning
  • Experience in implementing different types of replication models like Snapshot, Merge and Transactional
  • Expertise in handling database maintenance with minimal to zero downtime

$180,000 - $196,000 a year
For cash compensation, we set standard ranges for all US-based roles based on function, level, and geographic location, benchmarked against similar-stage growth companies. Per applicable law, the salary range for this role is $180,000 - $196,000. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors as well as candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the identified range.
