Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.
What you’d be doing in this role
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
Job Description
At the moment, this role is focused on:
- As an individual contributor, work closely with Machine Learning Engineers to deploy models to production.
- Develop performant APIs and data processing pipelines that meet latency and/or throughput requirements. In a previous project, we backfilled predictions for tens of billions of items!
- Run A/B experiments to quantify user impact.
- Ensure our systems comply with Canvas’s strict policies around data usage for AI.
- Propose innovative approaches and solutions to ensure we future-proof Canva’s distributed cloud infrastructure as we scale. Participating in design meetings, hiring interviews, and code reviews.
- Collaborate with other teams in Content and Discovery to provide metadata that helps them on their mission. One team, one dream!
You're probably a match if
- You have experience with distributed system observability such as monitoring, metrics, log aggregation and tracing. We primarily use DataDog and ElasticSearch. Equivalent experience will be considered.
- Familiar with asynchronous or reactive programming techniques and associated patterns; At our scale, writing blocking code is often not an option.
- You will be happy to work in our environment and be familiar with Java, RDS, and AWS.
- You have experience developing APIs with backend web frameworks and working with third-party open-source libraries.
- You are firmly grounded in computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.
- You will have the ability to work with a diverse range of individuals from different backgrounds and with different professional and personal needs.
About the team
The Content Understanding Team is on a mission to improve the discoverability of our content (images, video, audio, templates) using machine learning. As a team within Content & Discovery, we work closely with Search Quality and Recommendations teams to find opportunities to apply ML models to annotate content with metadata and improve the discovery experience for users.
Our projects are an opportunity to develop systems that operate at scale and run experiments to quantify user impact using A/B testing.
