Where and how you can work
Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.
About the Group
The Trust & Safety (T&S) Group vision is to make Canva the world’s most trusted company for safe design. To safeguard our community, our T&S engineering teams build technologies to protect user safety (including but not limited to their account, content, data, and privacy) and to prevent, detect, and mitigate abuse and fraud that could compromise the trust people have in Canva, such as unacceptable content, bots, account takeovers, and other abuse vectors.
About the Role
We are seeking a Frontend Engineer to support our Content Safety function. You’ll get hands-on experience writing reusable code and technical documentation to build intuitive user experiences, actively refactor core parts of the application to use new components, and help drive the team's UX goals. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer who knows how to both communicate well and design components that balance simplicity and flexibility.
- You'll learn how to build a design system in a complex product with a wide range of concerns, including accessibility, cross-platform, and cross-device considerations.
- You'll learn how to navigate our Canva organisational structure - an ever-growing startup where you will get a chance to understand different teams and engineers motivations and experiences, and teach them how to improve frontend best practices with the tools we built.
Role Responsibilities:
- Build efficient and reusable frontend components and systems to support in content moderation, to prevent and detect content abuse, account abuse and other forms of malicious or fraudulent behaviors.
- Collaborate with product designers and Figma designs to clearly understand all use cases while identifying engineering requirements
- Contribute to defining, improving, and codifying best practices and methodologies for frontend engineering at Canva
- Craft and present engaging presentations to the frontend specialty
- Communicate with other team members to figure out the best solutions to difficult problems
- Participate in design and code reviews
- Identify and address performance bottlenecks
- Take a proactive approach to identify potential trust and safety risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
Required Experience:
- Minimum 2 years experience developing rich web applications, ideally Typescript/React/MobX
- Understand the entire product life cycle, features, technical debt, QA, and supporting quality at speed
- Proven experience delivering value against company goals
- Working with a design system or maintaining components other teams depend on
- Practical knowledge of data structures and algorithms
Nice to have:
- Experience working with various partners such as product managers, technical program managers, data analysts, reviewers, security, legal, and other business functions outside of engineering
- Cross-browser and cross-device development
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, and experience with containerization technologies.
- Experience in trust & safety, content moderation, fraud, or abuse preferred
