About the Position
Wheel is seeking an exceptional legal healthcare expert to serve as Deputy General Counsel. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing all commercial, regulatory, and compliance functions, reporting directly to the executive team. What You'll Do
Commercial
Lead and oversee all legal negotiations for commercial transactions, collaborating closely with the sales team to facilitate timely and efficient deal closures.
Draft and review complex commercial agreements, including SaaS, MSAs, and Collaboration Agreements, while considering all relevant legal and regulatory considerations for contracting health care software and services.
Drive improvements in the contracting process based on experience gained from supporting commercial transactions, defining optimal business terms and deal structures.
Develop, maintain, and refine legal templates and negotiation playbooks to streamline contract workflows.
Act as the primary legal point of contact for the sales team, handling new contract requests, renewals, amendments, and expansions.
Provide strategic and practical business and legal advice to foster strong relationships with Wheel, partners, and vendors, representing Wheel in external meetings and negotiations alongside the sales team.
Identify and communicate agreement terms, associated risks, and interpret contract requirements, obligations, and risk assessments to relevant stakeholders, providing sound advice.
Stay up-to-date on relevant industry, commercial, and other laws, regulations, and developments to ensure effective guidance.
Regulatory & Compliance
Provide legal support to clinical operations and commercial teams in addressing regulatory issues related to new partnerships.
Advise the Implementation team on compliance matters concerning telehealth solutions launched by Wheel for its clients.
Conduct internal investigations pertaining to privacy and security incidents.
Maintain regulatory databases containing key resources for internal teams.
Negotiate key terms in business associate agreements to ensure compliance.
Who You Are
5+ years of experience in commercial contracting and healthcare regulatory law at a startup or in-house.
Expertise in telehealth laws and regulations, including the Anti-Kickback Statute, fee-splitting laws, Corporate Practice of Medicine, and HIPAA.
Proven track record in drafting and negotiating agreements.
JD degree from an accredited law school in the United States.
Licensed attorney in a U.S. jurisdiction (NY, CA, TX preferred)
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas and concepts in a clear and accessible manner.
Strong problem-solving abilities, capable of approaching challenges from first principles and challenging traditional thinking.
Comfortable operating at both strategic and detailed levels, with the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and long-term goals.
Thrives in ambiguous startup environments with rapid change.
Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to quickly gain expertise in new industries and business types.
Capable of independently solving problems or working with minimal guidance.
